Description

Old stone house 90 sq.m. which needs renovation, on a plot of 6028 sq.m. in Episkopi Mylopotamos with remaining construction of 132 sq.m. The entire settlement of Episkopi has been classified as a preserved monument, since as a settlement it is preserved almost unchanged and preserves church monuments from Byzantine times, as well as important buildings from the period of the Venetian rule in Crete. Characteristic of the settlement are the two small narrow streets, in its northern and southern parts, which are surrounded along their entire length by buildings. In the center of the settlement is the church of Agios Georgios, which dates from the Venetian period, and the Church of Agios Ioannis. The Church of Agios Ioannis, built on the ruins of an early Christian basilica of the 5th century, belongs to the inscribed cruciform type with a dome and dates back to the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century. It was the cathedral of the Diocese of Avlopotamos during the Venetian period. Important buildings in the settlement of Episkopi are the property complex Ioannis Kyrimis (old Episcopal Palace) and the property complex Kyrimaki Michael, declared as historical monuments. The episcopal palace, residence of the Latin Bishop Avlopotamos, consists of a complex of two-story buildings that all belong to the Venetian period. During the period of the Turkish occupation, it received interventions mainly in its internal structure. In addition to the main residential areas, it includes storage areas and oil, wine and raki production areas. The Kyrimaki property complex has an area of 720 sq.m. and was originally built during the Venetian period, but most of the buildings were built in the early and late Turkish periods. But buildings that have been classified as preserved monuments are the Venetian fountain and the water mill on the borders of the Bishopric and near a fountain from the Ottoman period, the water of which was channeled through a pipeline and set the said mill in motion. The mill belongs to the one-room type, where the workshop also functions as the miller's residence.
