The historical “Kasino” is the oldest coffe shop-tavern in Nisyros. It belongs to the same family for over three generations and, in spite of its name, it’ s never been an establishment of intense gambling. It is built in 1875 by local craftsmen, during the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese islands. It was the favorite place of the locals for almost a century, when Nisyros had four times the population it has today. It was the largest coffee shop in the island with such volume of capacity. Most of happy social events, such as weddings and baptisms parties took place here. As the traces on the walls suggest, “Kazino” also witnessed some sad incidents at the end of World WAR II, when someone threw a grenade in the shop which was full of people. The “Kazino” was renovated by the youngest members of the family Vivi and Mike in 2012 and it is certified as “Traditional listed building “by the Greek Ministry of Culture. It works all year around, every day. Vivi prepares traditional dishes by the recipes of her grandmother Eftihia, and offers a variety of beverages. Her specialty is the Greek coffee made on the hot sand as it was made by her great grandmother in the same shop. Inside one can see some original handmade wooden furniture that were made when it first opened and a collection of historical and traditional items.
