The village of Agios Vlassis is 12.7 km from the city of Heraklion on the road Irakleio – Fortezza – Vasilies – Agios Vlassis. It is built on the western slopes of mountain Giouchtas sanctuary at an altitude of 260 metres. For the first time its name appears in the manuscript related to churches and Monasteries (Ecclesiarum et Monasteriorum Catasticum Comunis) of 1320 and thereafter refers to all subsequent censuses until today. In an Ottoman document in 1684 we find the name of the village as Magaralar. Characteristic of the village is the Ottoman Mosque which is one of the few that still exist at the countryside of Crete. At the local cafes and in the dining space you can discover dishes made with Cretan pure products with rich flavors. On the 4th of July, a fest for St. Andrew is being held at the village. Patron is the namesake Saint Vlassis who celebrates on February 11.
