In the time of Justinian the fixed bridge was replaced with a movable structure. The Turks replaced this once again with a fixed bridge. In 1856, a wooden swing bridge was built in 1896, an iron swing bridge, and in 1962, the existing "sliding bridge" the construction works of the 19th century destroyed the most part of the medieval castle built across the bridge. The Euripus Bridge or Chalcis Bridge, a cable-stayed suspension bridge opened in 1993, joins Chalcis to the mainland to the south. HOW TO GET HERE Driving north along the National Road of Athens-Lamia, on the 60th km of the National Road to Thessaloniki and almost immediately after the second toll, you will see the sign to Chalkida. Turn right onto the National Road Chalkida-Schimatari and after about 15 km you have reached the city. Ηe most important gateway to and from the island of Evia, Chalkida, is one of the most ideal escapes for fun and good food, but also for walks on the beach with the ... crazy waters and the castle area. Built on the two sides of the Euripus Strait with one piece in Evia and the other in Central Greece, Chalkida is an ideal destination for short vacations and more. Today Chalkida is the capital and main port of the prefecture of Evia. It is about 70 km away from Athens and is ideal for excursions and walks along the coast but also on the hill where the ancient fortress of Karamba is located and of course at the bridge of Evripos where one can see the unique phenomenon of tide. WHAT TO SEE IN THE CITY At the entrance of the city, there is the new impressive cable tower, a modern technological achievement, which helps to make the town easier to approach and to avoid traffic jams in the center, while the old, mobile bridge is used by visitors point of observation of the tidal alternating movement of Evoikos waters. From here starts the most cosmopolitan point of the city, the tourist, coastal pedestrian street with cafes, restaurants and ouzo. TIDAL PHENOMENON Chalkida is famous for the tidal phenomenon of the Euripus Strait, a rare phenomenon of changing the direction of the flow of sea currents. This phenomenon has caused the admiration and interest of people from ancient times, both from astronomical, geophysical and philosophical point of view. At the site where the old bridge is located, the visitor can observe the change of direction of the water every 6 hours, sometimes from the North Evian Gulf to the south and vice versa. There is also the only peak in the phenomenon where the current speed reaches even 9 miles an hour and makes the tidal phenomenon even more noticeable, thus confirming the existence of the admirable natural rules operating within the nature of nature. THE BRIDGES The town is now connected to the mainland Greece by two bridges, the "Sliding Bridge" in the west at the narrowest point of the Euripus Strait and a suspension bridge.
