Archanes is a beautiful town built at an altitude of about 400 meters, in the middle of a basin that flows through the torrent of Kairatos and divides it into two unequal parts. It is located 14 km from the city of Heraklion and just 7 km from the Minoan palace of Knossos. This "colorful" village has been awarded in a European Union contest and is an example for its residential development. One can visit the small museums, discovering the history of the area through the findings of the Minoan-Byzantine times, up to the exhibits of folklore art. Also, many buildings of wonderful architecture and Byzantine churches confirm the characterization of Archanes as a traditional settlement.
